OU Medicine Announces Change in Prescribing Controlled Substances

Due to a new Oklahoma Law (Oklahoma House Bill 2931), OU Medicine is  now using an electronic prescribing system allowing healthcare providers to send prescriptions directly to a patient’s pharmacy. The law mandates prescriptions for all controlled pain medications and other “controlled substances” must now be sent electronically. 

The medications affected by the new law include those prescribed for:

• ADHD
• Pain management
• Seizure
• Depression/anxiety

While some pharmacies are not able to accept electronic prescriptions for controlled substances, most large retail pharmacies are able to accommodate the new law.

Prescriptions for controlled substances will now be sent directly from the OU Medicine provider’s office to the pharmacy, which should be more convenient for patients. This will allow providers and pharmacies to electronically store information about these medications. This can help avoid drug-to-drug interactions and may help prevent allergic reactions.

Patients can contact their pharmacy directly to refill prescriptions. The pharmacy will contact the provider for approval.
