Medicaid Expansion: How can Oklahoma Better Address Basic Health Needs?

OKLAHOMA CITY – As Oklahoma expands Medicaid, healthcare professionals are in an optimal position to assess how to better address basic health needs.

A virtual event for health professionals and other Oklahomans who are interested in how to handle social determinants of health, including the primary drivers of community health outcomes is planned Tuesday, September 28. The event is offered by: Oklahoma Primary Healthcare Improvement Cooperative; the Patients, Practice & Academics Resource Team for New Evidence from Research council (PARTNER); University of Oklahoma College of Medicine; and the Oklahoma Shared Clinical and Translational Resources Initiative.

Speakers will describe how they are addressing social determinants of health issues and what has or hasn't worked. They include:

  • Dr. Nathan Valentine, chief quality officer, Oklahoma Healthcare Authority
  • Jami Snyder, Arizona Medicaid director and Susan Podshadley, program director, Whole Person Care Initiative
  • Carrie Slatton-Hodges, commissioner, Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services

Topics to be covered include:

  • What Medicaid Expansion currently looks like in Oklahoma
  • What programs exist through Medicaid that address the social determinants of health
  • Medicaid Expansion in other states and its relationship to the social determinants of health
