“How to make engaging health behavior change apps: Earned insights from designing and testing smartphone apps for cigarette smoking cessation”

Many health researchers are interested in harnessing the potential of smartphone apps to help change behaviors including tobacco use, alcohol, diet, exercise, medication compliance and health screening.  Dr. Bricker’s team takes a user centered design approach to developing and testing his suite of apps for cigarette smoking cessation.  In this talk, he will present his lab’s iterative design process, with the example of quit smoking apps for both the general population of smokers as well as an app tailored to cancer patients.   He will also present his study results on a recently completed randomized trial of cancer patients, highlighting user receptivity and quit smoking outcomes.  Attendees will leave with a summary of earned principles for designing an engaging health behavior change app.
